Racial Trauma Therapy for Black and BIPOC Adults in Texas and Florida

You're tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. You code-switch all day, brace yourself before meetings, and replay comments you couldn't respond to in the moment. Maybe people tell you it's "just anxiety." Living with racism at work, in healthcare, in the news, and sometimes in your own family takes a real toll.

I'm Nicole Obih, LCSW, a Black queer therapist offering online racial trauma therapy to adults anywhere in Texas and Florida. Here, you don't have to explain why it hurt or prove that it happened.

What racial trauma can look like

  • Constant alertness: scanning rooms, rehearsing what you'll say, never fully relaxing

  • Exhaustion from code-switching and being "the only one"

  • Anger or numbness after incidents at work, at school, or in the news

  • Anxiety, low mood, trouble sleeping, or feeling disconnected from your body

  • Pressure to be twice as good, and guilt when you rest

  • Hurt from microaggressions you were told to let go

What's often underneath

Much of what looks like anxiety or burnout started as protection. Staying alert, staying quiet, and overperforming kept you, and often the people who raised you, safer. Those strategies made sense. Therapy is a place to honor that, notice where they're costing you now, and choose what you want to keep.

How I work with racial trauma

Racism is part of the conversation from the start, not a side topic. We'll name what's happened, make sense of how it shows up in your body and relationships, and build tools that hold up in real life, at a pace that feels safe. My approach is trauma-informed and culturally responsive, and it draws on proven methods like CBT and ACT. I'm warm and direct: affirming, but not passive.

What can change

Early on, therapy is a place to exhale and say it out loud without editing yourself. Over time, the goal is to feel less on guard, set boundaries at work and at home, rest without guilt, and feel more at home in who you are.

Who this is for

Black, African, Caribbean, Latine, Asian, Indigenous, and multiracial adults in Texas and Florida, including first-generation and immigrant-family adults and BIPOC LGBTQ+ folks navigating more than one identity at once. Partners dealing with racial stress together can also work with me in couples therapy.
